#34 - Life, Dexter, Fabulous Beasts, Heavy Storm Ahead - 14/11/2025
This blogpost is one of the rare few i'll ever do in which I actually write it during the day. Or, well, the "day" approximately anyway hahaha, as it's currently near pitch-black outside due to the natural time-change late october. I actually like the days being darker for longer, it feels comfortable to me. Always felt happy being in the dark. But alas. In terms of life and how it's been, it's been...a lot. But im living, im alive, and thanks to a few circumstances lately i've been able to resolve a lot of issues with one of the people that I live with because we finally had a chance to butt heads and talk things out. I'm still frustrated at them, mind, but, I realise that I am also not perfect either and that a certain other someone has been pitting us against each other for a year. So, we're doing what we can to help the other now. I feel happy about that. But other than that, I've felt quite happy lately! I've been spending time with my partners in voice a lot more, exchanging even more interests, and...god, I love the pair of them. They make me so deeply happy. We've been playing through a game called As Dusk Falls and yknow what? god, what an underrated little game! It's legitimately such an interesting experience, with the choices you make in that game legitimately having consequences - far better than anything telltale or quantic dream could make imo. But I'm looking forward to playing more with them!
Now, to talk about Dexter. I know, crazy segway haha, but, I've actually been meaning to talk about Dexter for a while, all the way back in another blogpost. But I think enough time has passed for me to talk about it. Back on September 19th, I began to watch Dexter: the concept is interesting, a blood forensics/spatter guy working for Miami Metro who in his spare time is ALSO a serial killer that kills the criminals that escape justice and being imprisoned. From the get-go, it's so fascinating, because Dexter Morgan is a genuinely unsettling serial killer who doesnt just kill random people - he's a serial killer with an actual heart, or at least, a conscience, someone who actually goes after genuinely horrible and harmful people ranging from murderers to traffickers to actual rapists or pedophiles, and exploring that is interesting. He hides what he truly is so well, while also being an amazing asset to the police force he works for. His co-workers, Masuka, Batista, and LaGuerta (the lieutenant of the force) are none the wiser to his nature and consider him a fantastic asset to the force, and his sister is also none the wiser (Debra Morgan, an asset for Miami Vice who wants to be a part of the force fully). The only person who considers him to be odd is Doakes, who's a stubborn hard-head of a man who comes from a special opps background and has an inkling about Dexter. But anyway: the show, season 1 (don't worry, I won't give spoilers) explores Dexter as he becomes fascinated with the huge case going on at the time and his life as his existence other than being a serial killer is a cover, with the show exploring a lot of time he has with his soft-hearted girlfriend named Rita (who's a Domestic Violence/Rape survivor). Season one of Dexter is a brilliantly paced, atmospheric, genuinely unsettling romp through the life of a man who's both hero in the police force and a violent, precise, cut-throat vigilante who kills other criminals, and how he handles a huge case in Miami Metro that might have more to it than it seems. The atmosphere is dripping in tension, and the way the characters interact is genuinely not only entertaining but also very human. I especially like how Dexter cares about Rita, but he's not even sure if he cares about other people, only for his own actions to prove him wrong. I really enjoyed Dexter and I honestly really love Seasons 1 to 4 for what they did, especially 1. I don't mind seasons 5 to 8, but, their direction is just a bit too different from what I like. Dexter is a fascinating protagonist for being incredibly morally right for what he does but being morally evil for murdering people, and is the only protagonist that you can legitimately root for, for being a violent murderer. I like some of the continuations so far, but I need to just catch up with them as to be honest, they're a lot to take in.
On the other side, I recently watched all of Fabulous Beasts! I've been aware of this little show for some time, actually, I watched the video by Patricia Taxxon on it, on her alternate, second channel. But wow...this is damn good! I fucking love this show, actually. The concept is pretty cool: the show consists of four seasons, six minute episodes within, following the lives of the mythical chinese beasts that are having to adapt to the modern world. The show particularly focuses on the character of Pixiu, who's indebited to the smooth-talking and charismatic Sibuxiang, who himself was kicked out of the heavens to take care of the scattershot and often unwell mythical fantastic beasts from chinese history. While the idea of it sounds fairly simple, what makes it so entertaining is how all of the aspects that make it what it is come together to create something genuinely entertaining and, at times, genuinely emotionally resonant. To begin with, Fabulous Beasts is based on a webcomic of sorts by author Xia Mao Yao Zi, so the four seasons currently out adapt a good chunk of the first few double digit chapters afaik. But what that means is that the genuinely gorgeous style of the webcomic is translated over into incredibly lush, frenetic, animated pieces that are just visual wonders to look at. The voice acting and the musical score of the episodes compliments it as well, with the episodes being six minutes meaning that a lot of what happens on screen sticks with you and feels memorable as a result. Just seeing these characters talk is genuinely extremely entertaining and the more that the show adds characters across the seasons, and even goes into a lot of backstory for all of them (which fits when the show, suddenly but intriguingly becomes deeply serious), the more that the world of fabulous beasts comes alive. I honest to god deeply love what's on offer here and i'm a bit agonised that i'm probably gonna have to wait a year or so just for season five aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaguh. But, im gonna start reading the webcomic, given its uh...in the quadruple digits at the moment and is far more along than, say, the animated seasons. But man! What a show. I gotta say, I adore Sibuxiang and Tuye, the honey-coloured deer man with a cool mask and the arguably flamboyant moon rabbit - their personalities contrast each other so well and it's just fun seeing them on screen together, interacting. I ship em hard hehe <3, but, yeah! I've been pleasantly surprised by fabulous beasts lately and I hope for season five to not take ages to come out @w@
I guess, sort of related to what I opened up this blogpost with, but...man, there's a heavy storm out today. I don't really know what happened for us to get this sudden storm, but it's genuinely crazy outside right now. I haven't stepped a single foot out there for obvious reasons, I don't want to get utterly drenched, but the wind is so strong that it's forcing the rain again my window to stay still in place instead of drizzling down. I can even HEAR the wind against my window, trying to lash out and desperately get inside. The temperature thing on my windows task bar is a fucking liar haha, as it's nowhere near 16c outside, probably moreso 5c. But it's storms like this in which I hope to settle down to later, to be honest. I like storms, just not being in them.
I hope that things remain peaceful from here. A quiet end to the year sounds nice to me.
